Slide... Puzzling Card Play!

Tax your brain with this compact puzzle like game as you try to arrange your numbers to score the lowest total points. Can you slip and slide your way to victory?

This game first came to my attention at UK Games Expo last year after having a conversation with the Hachette team about new games and was keen to find out more. The game sounded simple though could offer a great depth of strategy, due to this I was keen to get my hands on a copy when it came out.

First Impressions

Upon receiving the game I found the front cover very eye catching and the shape of the box made it a game I was more than happy to travel around with. The front cover design is simple yet effective with a glossy finish on the lettering and cards to draw your eye. The reverse of the box is brilliant, really informative about what you get in the box, gives you a clear idea of the game play with key features of the game laid out clear and concisely. Inside the box the game has a wonderful insert that just pulls out the top which keeps everything well organised which I really liked.

Game Play Overview

Slide is a fast paced card game that is played over 16 rounds with the game ending once all the cards for each player has been revealed.

Each round players will simultaneously choose a card from their 4x4 grid of facedown cards and flip it face up placing the card in the middle of the play area. Then starting with the player with the first player marker and continuing clockwise each player chooses one card from the centre. Each player then slides the new card in to their grid from the outside edge of a row or column with an empty space in it to reform a 4x4 grid. You cannot place a card directly into an empty space when adding it to your grid. After all players have placed their card the first player marker moves to the next player and a new round begins.

The game ends at the end of the 16th round when all the cards in your 4x4 grid are face up. You then see if any cards that have the same number are orthogonally adjacent to one another, if they are remove them from your grid. You then add up the numbers remaining in your grid and the player with the lowest total score is the winner.

Pros and Cons

This game is really well produced and designed from how easy the rules are to read to how nice the components and box is to use. The production quality is great with very limited plastic used to package the product which is a massive positive for me. Due to the rules being so streamlined and straight forward this game is super quick to learn and teach allowing you to dive into the fun straight away. The only possible negative I found with this game was that it is sealed with circular clear stickers which left a little residue on my copy which isn't a huge issue to me, overall I was very happy with the game.

Final Verdict

This game has become one of my go to games in an evening. It is super quick to set up and teach and offers hours of fun. The simplicity of the rules keeps everyone engaged from beginning to end and the strategy engaging most strategic players I have played it with. I would highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys their fast paced games as this one is great for both families and hobbyists alike. If you enjoy Slide you may also enjoy Castle Combo and Monsters of Loch Lomond.

In conclusion, we would rate this game a 10/10
